But right now I'm forced to choose between an umbrella channel with thousands of followers, and a niche channel with effectively tens. Both feel like equally casting into the void.

"Crossposting" by quotecasting my own cast doesn't help, because it fractures engagement and the original content is obscured by an embed.

Some topics apply to every place and walk of life. /food. /travel. /itookaphoto /itookavideo.

Others are temporary Schelling Points for discussions about other topics, many of which end up becoming timeless. Think /podcasts, /events, /hackathons like /ethglobal, or conferences like /apple /devcon /ethdenver.

Just think about it.

Some topics are umbrella topics for others:
• /music for /classical /electronic /videogamemusic
• /dev for /frontend /backend /evm
• /farcaster for /fc-updates /fc-devs /miniapps
• Continents/countries/cities like /europoooooor /sea /america /prague /los-angeles

If it were opt-in by channel mods we'd have the best of both worlds!

I think channels shift more towards hashtags with this type of change.

I still vibe with the channel idea. I like that there are places I can go to get "curated" content.

Maybe. Or (what I think is more more likely), it becomes that much easier to naturally discover new and interesting content related to things I am already interested in.

I daresay real hashtags haven't been tried. We have so many new primitives at our disposal: LLMs, channel permissions, social reputation.

Surely there's a cozy middle in between hashtag anarchy and what we have now, which is content trapped in undiscoverable silos and a home feed that doesn't feel shaped to my interests.

Disagree. Channels are not hashtags.

If its a "multi-dimensional" cast that is not about a specific niche community post the cast without a channel.

This makes a lot of sense, a cast can fit into multiple channels 👍
