am i wrong to think that GCP Cloud SQL absolutely should not cost $254/month for the base instance type? this seems wildly expensive

In 2014 when cloud computing started to take shape I did a paper during my masters and predicted this, for some reason I remember this because the teacher went out of his way to talk about the paper.

Deliver cheaper prices than on-premise at first then using market capture increase the cost far beyond on-premise.

For sure those two free VMs from Oracle make like 3% in terms of computing power and resources of what you described here.

i am running two redundant hubs on e2-standard-2 hubs with 3 persistent 100gb disks. also have a docker postgres replication within one of the VMs, so likely do not need much more than that.

all in $45~ month

I'll tell you a secret Oracle Cloud still offers two small AMD VMS, with dedicated IPs for free forever(or at least until they cancel the program).

Don't know if such VM is capable of running a hub probably not but still can run some apps very well.
