I returned in 2019 and 2023 and it felt good but not quite the same feeling of freedom and carelessness…

are you sure this isn't more internal, perhaps 2016 was particularly special to you? i'm genuinely having a blast, both vibes and hk friends feel just as fun as in the years prior to me

I find it got a bit cleansed after the reopening. No more late night eats. The dining crowd never really came back in full force. Lots of the neon signs gone. 

I still love it, just find it wasn’t the same as 2019 (ok, 2019 protests, weren’t the same either, lol, but at least it happened)

I guess this is what we call evolution. I’ve been frequenting hong Kong since 2000, so I have nostalgia and lost memories. 

Like a fave bar that served mediocre pizza, ok wings, but a great Guinness, shuttered during covid. It had a very cheers like vibe. And we actually knew about the place thru my friends uncle.

it's definitely not static, i agree it got cleansed a bit. and it keeps changing. i always see places through the lens of what i make of them, and in that sovereignty you still end up finding the best. a big part of it is the connections to people. hk's neon has sadly seen a sharp decline; many of the icons are gone, but definitely not all. there are still survivors, and efforts to preserve and archive them. the glow has shifted, but the spirit isn't dead

Ah yeah, totally forgot that almost (all?) old neon lights are gone now. That's a huge change in the feel of the city.
