I've spent a year travelling through Latin America, and spent <$50 / night virtually every night. Some places I recommend that are great to marinate in one's solitude (though might be harder to get there): - Areponapuchi in Mexico (quiet heart of the Copper Canyon) - Jardin or Jericó in Colombia (there are many other chill, small towns in the country's coffee-growing region) - Sigchos or Isinlivi in Ecuador (these are two really small towns along the Quilotoa Loop hiking trail) - Samaipata in Bolivia (small town quite near where Che Guevera was eventually killed by the Bolivian army) - Any of the smaller towns in the Sacred Valley in Peru, e.g. Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, Pisac (though you will still encounter a lot of foreign tourists there if you stay within the town and don't venture into the mountains) - Iruya in Argentina (or any of the small towns in Jujuy Province, e.g. Humahuaca, Tilcara, Maimará) - I also like Ushuaia in Argentina for its hiking opportunities, but it is winter there now
