Proposing the term "Ecosystem Goods" Why EGs? Just like we have consumer goods for individuals, and commercial goods for businesses, "Ecosystem Goods" reflects the level of societal organization at which the good is valued (and funded) For example, consumers may value smartphones, businesses value machinery, and ecosystems value unbiased journalism. Individuals on their own are unlikely to come together and fund the production of machinery - for that you need a higher level of coordination, which businesses can provide. Similarly, individuals or businesses on their own are unlikely to come together and fund the ecosystem good of unbiased journalism (and there would be questions about their motives) - for that you need a higher level of coordination, which ecosystems can provide.

I like the visual π and the ideaπ‘ but the line that individuals and business will voluntarily come together to fund anything like unbiased journalism long term is simply not true β¦ such idealistic scenario doesnβt exist imho Humans (and businesses) are by nature transactional in exchanging value. There are exceptions and but they donβt apply in any other moment than in moments of perceived abundance, then they stop

Oh, but that's exactly what I'm saying. They're unlikely to do that, that's part of the reason we have a coordination failure in the area of public goods. What I'm saying is that you're only going to fund such goods at scale effectively if people see a clear value in forming ecosystems where the Ecosystem Good contributes to the economic success of the ecosystem

I understand and I am afraid itβs more about seeing clear value for βmeβ because weβre more individualistic than ever

Right. If you're a developer in a hardware company, for example, you don't get direct benefit from the company funding machinery. But if that's what gets the most ROI you still value it. Same can work at the ecosystem level; you'd want the ecosystem to fund whatever results in the greatest economic growth for the ecosystem (which could be unbiased journalism, infrastructure, etc.), since that contributes to your ability to prosper. You wouldn't want to be a part of ecosystems that misallocate funding, just like you wouldn't want to work in a company that misallocates funding
