not sure i understand this approach. i include all assets.

with a self directed IRA you can invest in almost anything. with rollovers you can move 401(k) funds into an IRA, and with ROTH conversions you can make your same portfolio tax advantaged

imo many over-invest in real estate b/c they exclude primary residence

I treat 401(k) as disaster planning. If it all goes to $0 that's what remains. So I don't even include it in calcs.
