what I learned is that I got to invest into better branding presentation, mockups and other templates as I wasn't doing it that often templates aren't everything though and even though some submissions look real polished with them in place - they lack soul and contain obvious mistakes / some details off

final thought is about the contest overall: 1 week to do branding is not the best way to do it, there may be one or couple ideas out of it for the company/team to get inspiration from but otherwise design taste is too subjective and most designers will not earn anything

branding is a complex and lengthy process designed to make all parties happy about it, in terms of contest you have one shot making it highly unlikely to hit the target (see $opsys process)
