Day 26 after the Air India 171 crash and we are starting to receive some indications that the fuel switches may have been moved to the CUTOFF position at some point during the takeoff or initial climb sequence.

Cool. I don’t know anything about piloting or how planes work, but it seems risky to have a pilot work this fuel switch, when it could be done on automatically and deactivate until a certain altitude. 

I guess what is confusing to me (having read surface level) is why is it so hard to correct this error of the fuel switch being at cutoff, as the pilot?

There is, you get a master caution at least, plus the display from the FADEC. We may eventually figure out from the CVR whether the pilot realized what was going on.

But at such a low altitude, even if you realize that the switches are off, there’s not enough time to spool the engines back up

How is there not a big fat flashing light that says “holy fuck you have the fuel switches turned off”??!?!?!!?

Note: there’s talk of a jumpseater being present in the cockpit that day, so who knows — there’s precedent of a jumpseater trying to reach for the throttles once before

I struggle as well, believe me

All we have is this indication about the fuel being cutoff, the rest is just speculative, hopefully we can find out soon how this happened

Could this have been done from the ground by, say, a foreign enemy intervening the planes beforehand?

I struggle to imagine a lone suicidal mass murderer pilot.

I don’t know why, but if human intervention was the reason for the crash it would be „positive“ for me cause it would restore trust in the tech „plane“. And maybe with AI down the road there is something we can add to decrease the amount of successful suicides?

Terrible from a human perspective, of course — 9.5B people entrusted their lives to pilots last year, and as much as we can reduce mechanical or environmental hazards, there’s very little we can do against pilot murder-suicides, just prevention and psychological care
