Why do some people turn their porch light off when they go to bed? Isn't that just telling a thief it's the perfect time to strike and making it harder for your neighbors to see anyone doing something weird at your door?

No, it's signaling to the world that you're not accepting any visitors right now and that includes robbers.  Any robbers that rob you when you're not ready are just rude. 

I did just learn that the majority of burglaries in the US happen between midday and 3pm - very civilized.

My outdoor light is off 95% of the time. Only put it on when I’m expecting guests or a delivery at night.
