I haven’t read his books but I’m quite familiar — his hypothesis was all the rage in the 70s and 80s and coincided (perhaps unfortunately) with the New Age woo momentum that quickly embraced the hippy concept of Mother Earth as a living organism.

What I like is that, no matter how provocative and leftfield the original idea is, there’s been an increasing amount of supporting evidence toward some weaker form of the Gaia hypothesis.

Specifically, metaorganisms (ecosystems acting as one macro being), climate feedback loops (regulation and amplification mechanisms), human microbiome and connectome emergent effects, etc — they all show that some properties emerge at scales larger than the discrete scales we typically studied in isolation.

It’s fascinating stuff and a rabbit hole of its own to be honest
