I simultaneously appreciate and struggle with FC’s willingness to churn existing users in pursuit of top line growth

The rationalist in me knows that being sub-scale is the worst outcome (neither 0 nor 1 in a boolean experiment)

But the romantic in me senses that this is a community project, not a platform

i made the meme to send it to friends for lulz after seeing varun's cast this morning hehe. kinda sorta felt relevant to what you were saying so shared here instead. 

i feel the same way as you do. you just say it much more eloquently than i ever could. the proof? the meme i just made to make a similar point vs the cast you wrote. lol

But also: "what got you here won't get you there"

I see. I guess I’m just curious why it can’t survive as a niche community experiment (both my halves are romantic). Why does it have to win the venture game?

When you run an experiment, you want to avoid inconclusive results

A similar silicon valley axiom is "linear growth is to be avoided" -- you either want to be sub-linear, so you change your tactics OR superlinear, and you scale. If you're stuck thinking you're fine but growing modestly, you won't be able to win on venture timelines

Few people want to spend the next 30 years building the SMTP of social that everyone uses but the authors are long forgotten. Much sexier to spend 5 years building iMessage with all the perks of owning the blue bubble kingdom.

the thing is that the most stubborn ones and unchurnable

and those are the ones that make it what it is

i've spent a year casting on spam label for the meta to change when i'm out of the castjail 

but we keep moving, it is a wrong move to make this a competition rather than a cross-pollination mechanism
