I think it's a natural evolution of an educational system that was created to provide capitalism with an endless supply of workers who knew just enough to do the job, and not enough to question it.

Regardless of the governing structure, the true X factor are the educators who challenge and help their students see and act beyond their social and financial limitations. Thats not to say properly funded resources don't make a difference, but its only part of the bigger picture.

We can scoff and rag on this kind of hyper active learning, but we should acknowledge that as our attention spans thin, a wedge like this can lead to a deeper outcome.

I think the root of it is a general lack of curiosity.  And I don't know if that's totally because of conditioning or it's just that like everything else about humans, curiosity is a spectrum and it's a trait discouraged in our society.  I wondered why others weren't so excited about school at a very, very young age because most people just want to eat, play, and sleep, will work if they have to, as long as they can eat, play, and sleep between shifts.

A tragedy of the commons is trying to filter learning into regimented structures, when in reality it, like most things exist on a spectrum. 
Forcing someone to learn one way, then judging them based on that way alone is something this society is sadly proficient at

Oh, I do agree with that.  It's an adaptation because that's what humans do, and that's also what information does.  Well-done, they can be a great seed for curiosity.  And I've got ADHD so I use some wacky ways of studying - we've got to do what works with the attention spans we've got.
