from a user perspective, how does paying for a "community owned" product in web3 diff from paying for a commercial (aka "shareholder owned") product?

depends on execution but the spectrum of ownership between community and shareholder can be pretty wide

I think the key is in the fact that the rights of shareholders is pretty clearly defined and established. This is a known value/risk proposition. The range @garrett refers to I think speaks to the potential of what token holding could theoretically permit, due to the nature of the technology. It increases the potential of value as well as risk. But in practice we've not yet seen more if the risks be exposed with less of the value production, which I think maybe is the core of this thought exercise?

yea, I feel we're just scratching the surface in terms of what's possible w value proposition & tokenization. But in the meantime too many projects are promoting their product as "community owned" tho in practice it's just a sexier way of saying they have shareholders.
