Spotify changed their TOS on their audiobook platform to include what they call a “limited license” that grants them essentially unlimited, irrevocable rights over authors’ work. Can’t imagine this clause will last very long.

This is cool. Amazon has a Patent Evaluation Program that allows patent holders to challenge infringing products and get them de-listed from Amazon’s platform. It saves a lot of time and money compared to traditional litigation. https://www.patenttrademarkblog.com/what-is-amazon-apex/

Great overview of the history of patents - born in Venice in 1474 - Thomas Jefferson was the first patent examiner - evidence suggests patents help incentivize capital formation/investment - patent trolls are bad and the area most in need of reform https://blog.withedge.com/p/why-patents-history-progress-innovation

Thought this was a pretty good thread on NYT v ChatGPT. Havent read the opinion myself yet, but clearly we cant expect everyone who trains LLMs to pay licensing fees for every piece of training data. we also cant have piracy become the norm though. https://x.com/jason_kint/status/1740141400443035785?s=46

This is why strong IP is crucial for startups. Without it, there’s no protection from the big guys. Still isn’t over tho, if Biden doesn’t veto the ITC judgment Apple will appeal to the Federal Circuit. https://ipwatchdog.com/2023/12/18/apple-watches-off-market-following-itc-ruling/id=170839/

@dberg I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on fractionalized IP-NFTs and the broader category of IP Tokens. Still trying to learn more about Molecule’s model.

What is the expected cost of a patent these days? I remember $20k used to be the avg starting point has that changed and what makes sense for an OSS project that’s also commercial in nature?

i thought this podcast was a really good overview of why patents are so important to the pharma industry and alternatives to the traditional model. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/stranded-technologies-podcast/id1629706707?i=1000582296592

This channel is a place to discuss and debate all forms of intellectual property. I know more about patent law than other types of IP, but it's all interesting and relevant to crypto and tech in general. So whether you hate it or love it, share your thoughts about IP here.
