Currently enjoying the surprisingly restorative properties of mulled wine, which turns out to be unexpectedly nice when fighting off a cold.
The instructions below are based on a traditional English recipe, with a couple personal adjustments recommended by the British friend who shared it with me.
Ingredients:
• 2 × 750ml bottles medium to full-bodied red wine
• 1 whole orange, studded with cloves
• 4 oranges, sliced
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 8 tbsp granulated sugar
• 1 whole nutmeg, for grating (I actually just put 3 whole non-grated nutmegs in the pot instead)
• 2 tbsp brandy (I use 4 tbsp)
• 1.2 liters water
Method:
Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan.
Heat gently, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves.
Bring to a bare simmer and keep it there for at least 20 minutes; do not boil, or you’ll lose the alcohol.
Can be made ahead and reheated gently before serving.
Serve hot in mugs or sturdy wine glasses.
