The Ethereum Foundation is prioritizing security over speed in 2026. After making ZK-proofs fast in 2025, they are now mandating that all zkEVM teams meet a rigorous "128-bit" security standard to prevent potential hacks or state forgeries.
The Roadmap:
* Early 2026: Teams must use the official "soundcalc" tool to measure their actual security level, ending "marketing-based" security claims.
* Mid-2026: All production systems must reach at least 100-bit security while keeping proofs small enough to stay efficient.
* Late 2026: The final deadline to hit 128-bit security, the gold standard for cryptographic safety, effectively making the network "unhackable" by modern standards.
Why it’s happening:
The EF wants to move away from experimental math that sacrifices safety for performance. By enforcing these "non-negotiable" targets, Ethereum aims to become the most trusted layer for institutional finance and high-value assets, where even a tiny security flaw is unacceptable.
