Valar Atomics, first startup splitting the atom with help from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Milestone of a Department of Energy pilot program for startups to deliver 3 advanced nuclear reactors by July 4, 2026. More info: https://www.valaratomics.com/docs/Project-Nova There are currently no operating advanced reactors in the US Only China (2 reactors at 1 facility), Russia (2 reactors at 1 facility), Japan (1) Advanced nuclear reactors overview from Congressional Research Service (2023): https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/R/PDF/R45706/R45706.7.pdf

Australia generates so much solar power that the government is making electricity free for 3 hours per day. People will reallocate usage, prices elsewhere will rise, it will remove cases of negative prices, and the benefits of cheap energy will be distributed. Not a better solution than more batteries, but not a terrible one, benefitting from govt’s unique ability to set a Schelling point. Providers seem to be okay with it overall.

For all the talk about skyrocketing energy demand and widespread resource development (solar, nuclear, etc), how that energy actually gets into the market gets quite a bit less press. "...[T]here are 2.6 terawatts of generation waiting in queues – over 2x the installed capacity of the entire US generating fleet. The vast majority of that capacity is low carbon, with solar and battery storage accounting for ~80% of the 900+ GW that entered the queue in 2023." Interconnection presents a massive bottleneck at the moment (and the near future). All the more reason for more exploration of localized generation (home solar, geothermal, nuclear, etc). https://congruent.substack.com/p/uncorking-the-interconnection-bottleneck

energy x atom /with bits says it all. we need more energy density for power density for w Work: W = F · d Power: P = dW/dt Volumetric power density: P / V Gravimetric power density: P / m Volumetric energy density: E / V Gravimetric energy density: E / m

The grid is a seesaw - it’s not just about the energy source, but about the balance. (thank you to WNYC’s morning show for this analogy) We need to modernize the grid. Balance it resiliently. Our grids are interconnected and siloed. Think about what happened in Texas a few years ago when they had terrible snow storms. Their isolated grid was f*cked. Yesterdays outages shows the negatives of interconnected grids My answer: keep the grid supply clean (renewables), balance it with technology (batteries and load management software) It’s almost like this is what I do for my day job 😇☀️🔋
