As a young teenager, I had a friend who lived a few houses down the street. We were 12, 13 years old, I think. We played together, often in his room. He had a radio transmitter and was making radio shows. THe transmitter had a reach of just about as far as my house, so I could also sometimes listen to him. He was very passionate about it.
Of course, he moved into the media world. First a local station, then he went national. He became a star, with his own tv show even. We had long lost contact by then. But I was still not only proud, but also impressed: he had made his career from a early age passion for making radio.
Today I saw the news that he passed away earlier this week. At 52, much too young. Sure, he was controversial, and especially later in his career I thought he said some dumb things. But he was my friend then, and he built a career from his passion. Something not all of us get to do.
Wherever you are now, Robert, I'm sure you're entertaining the masses with your showmanship. Rest in peace, my friend.
