Since Tech Twitter and Crypto Twitter love a good runaway narrative, figured I’d share some context on how Coinbase actually uses AI having briefly worked there last year. I found Coinbase to be refreshingly way ahead of the curve when it came to embracing automation and AI tools at every level of the company. In particular as an engineer, I had practically unlimited usage of Cursor, Warp, Figma Make, even fully sandboxed on-premise whitelabeled instances of Claude Code. Linear, Slack, Google Docs, GitHub, Sourcegraph and the company intranet were fully wired together through bots, webhooks, MCPs and seemingly every variation of obscure enterprise SaaS integration mechanism you could imagine. Despite all that, every commit and PR still had to be attributed to your name (AI-assisted or not), dozens of security and code quality checks were put in place which could take up to 20-30 minutes per iteration, and you still needed signoffs from multiple members of your team to merge, deploy, or change a config. The internal tools simply would not allow otherwise. To be fair, I didn’t necessarily find this to be a strictly better or more productive way of working – just different and with its own cadence and learning curve. In practice, I was still context switching dozens of times a day between lots of projects and tools, fighting mountains of legacy tech debt from past technical + product decisions outside of my control (before @spindl got acquired), and generally dealing with lots of obscure proprietary enterprise SaaS baggage. It was extremely overwhelming at first, but the AI tools and integrations definitely made things much more bearable. When I visited the Coinbase office in New York I briefly chatted with folks who worked on blockchain node integrations. It was fascinating hearing how they had built end-to-end automations that could anticipate every possible future blockchain fork, and orchestrate the corresponding infrastructure changes like clockwork. Think of Ethereum and how much coordination was required for The Merge alone – now multiply this by dozens of blockchains each with completely different architectures, timelines and technical nuances. Totally impossible to maintain at Coinbase’s scale without any sort of help from AI. Lastly, Kyle Cesmat’s interview on Syntax from last October is an underrated watch. https://youtube.com/watch?v=x7bsNmVuY8Ma https://x.com/wesbos/status/2051650819326386618h

Yo this is clown ass status. Coinbase, zora, all of it. I can mint an SPL-22 with custom features (transfer tax or interest bearing or just immutable) for 0.005 SOL which is like $0.45, then seed liquidity on Orca for .02 SOL fee ($1) then add liquidity on Meteora for like 0.03 SOL fee ($1.5) and and add my own SOL liquidity, with as little as like $10, tradable on Jupiter within a few mins, maybe $15 total expense. Its crazy because its actually cheaper to do all these liquidity mechanisms on Base chain, that's why theres no fee to posting Zora Content Coins, but on Solana there is a different fee mechanism called 'token acoount rent' paid for every new SPL token you swap, so each new Content coin will cost 0.002 SOL to tokenize, literally $0.17 to initialize AND and anyone who buys will have to pay that extra 0.002 SOL too, where you don't have to pay your own token account rent on Base chain, on base chain its just transaction fees that are currently cheaper than Solana! Coinbase curbing their own chains potential and use case. Actual clown show, a circus act.
