Recently, I noticed that the prices of some imported goods have gone up when I was shopping at the supermarket. Especially fruits and everyday items. Later, I found out that this is related to the US-China trade war. The US has imposed a 125% tariff on Chinese goods, while China has added an 84% tariff on American goods. These tariffs have caused prices to rise. The prices of imported goods, like American beef and Chinese electronics, have gone up. To deal with this, I started choosing local products. Although the quality and supply of local goods might differ from imported ones, they are cheaper. My shopping habits have also changed because of this. I buy fewer imported goods and look for alternatives. If I shop on cross-border e-commerce, I also try using cryptocurrency to pay, which might reduce some transaction costs.

I Paid for a Meal with Bitcoin: A Simple Web3 Dining Experience That day, I didn’t bring my wallet. I only had my phone. A sign at the door said “Bitcoin Accepted.” I decided to give it a try. I walked in and asked the waiter if I could pay with Bitcoin. He said yes and showed me a QR code. I opened my wallet app, scanned the code, entered the amount, and hit send. The transaction took less than a minute. My phone showed “Transaction Complete.” Everything went smoothly. Before I paid, I had some concerns. I was worried the transaction might fail. I also worried about price drops. But once I sent it, I just let it go. The restaurant also had a special menu. You could only order from it if you booked in advance with an NFT. The waiter said I needed to connect my wallet online first. He said the spots usually sell out fast. I didn’t book ahead, so I ordered from the regular menu. But I saw what others ordered. Their dishes looked different. .

The Shift Towards On-Chain Activity Traditionally, airdrops were distributed based on simple criteria, such as holding a specific token or signing up for a mailing list. However, this approach often attracted "airdrop hunters" who sought immediate profits without genuine interest in the project's long-term success. To counter this, projects have started emphasizing on-chain activity, rewarding users who demonstrate authentic engagement through regular transactions and interactions with decentralized applications (dApps).

Case Study: zkSync's Airdrop Strategy The zkSync project exemplifies this trend by allocating a significant portion of its airdrop to users with substantial on-chain assets and active participation within the community. This strategy aims to encourage long-term holding and genuine involvement. However, despite these measures, data revealed that only 19.3% of the top 100,000 addresses continued to hold the token post-airdrop, while the majority opted to sell, highlighting the challenges in fostering lasting commitment.

Challenges and Considerations While emphasizing on-chain activity helps identify committed users, it also presents challenges: Complexity: Users may find it difficult to understand the specific activities that qualify for airdrop eligibility. Resource Intensiveness: Engaging in multiple transactions can incur significant costs, especially with high gas fees. Potential for Manipulation: Some users might artificially inflate their activity to appear more engaged than they truly are.
