It's hard to give Japanese restaurant recommendations because my favorites are all these small mom and pop joints.

Today's choice was an "Okinawan Soba" specialist.

The soup is light but the pork is much heavier than your standard Japanese fare. The rice on the left is also a local speciality called juushii.

Oooh yeah, we always try to eat what the locals eat, I think it's the best way to truly gain an understanding of culture and life in a place!

I think we may have been lucky because we were in very large cities like Tokyo. But if you head further afield I'm sure not everything has picture menus!

Truly, it's not hard to find good food. Love that you took that approach to finding restaurants while you were visiting. 

I am surprised the smaller joints had pictures. It's like 50/50 for me whether they just have some wooden planks or whether the pics are good.

That's such an interesting comment, and when we were visiting Japan, I very much found the same. Often the best joints were absolutely low key, smol places. They often didn't speak any English, but it was fine because the menus were lit and had great pictures.

Also, most (down here at least) are less than 1000 yen per meal, even today.

Also there’s soo many ive never been to and on average quality is great.

That place looks cozy, eating in places like that is quite an experience
