The amount of money we spent on stupid gifts for my son’s classmates could basically get us a family vacation

Ah sorry to hear that, must be an absolute nightmare. We went through the allergy tests with my daughter who vomited after having the powdered follow on food at 6 months and then had to spend the following four years trying to figure out what it was which meant testing for rice, milk, corn, egg, and fish allergies at 6 month intervals. Thankfully she's now not allergic to anything. Got friends who's kids have pretty serious egg and nut allergies and it must be so worrying for them, especially at things like other kids birthday parties.

Our son has a gluten and high fructose corn syrup allergy … makes planning for these things impossible

Oh god yeah it's awful. I have no idea how this trend started but my kids come back from school sometimes with gifts from kids because it's that kids birthday. Not even from birthday parties, but just from school. So many sweets too. We've got so many sweets in the house form these things we don't know what to do with them.
