during the holiday, i got invited to a church and i attended
what caught my attention was during praise & worship, there was a song with the lyrics “you’re worthy of my worship, worthy of my praise”. it’s my first time hearing the song so it got me thinking:
god is the almighty. he doesn’t become worthy because we worship him. in fact, some biblical figures felt they were unworthy to worship him (ref: bible)
so i think to say “you’re worthy of my worship….” sounds backwards. it centers the worshipper, not who’s being worshiped. it makes it sounds as if our worship gives god value.
you may question what’s wrong with this, but i think the lyrics implies human authority, like we are the ones determining god’s worth - he’s infinitely worthy, w/ or w/o human worship. we are only one of his numerous creatures
also, the focus shifts from god’s nature to our act of worship. it became about what we are doing, not who he is
tl;dr: the lyrics sounds like we are validating god 30 replies
