gen z isn’t a monolith. what’s normal to one group can sound wild to another. 

for some, especially in lgbt+ circles, using “gay” in a playful or ironic way can feel like reclaiming the word… it’s more about humour than insult.

but “retard” has a different history, it was once a clinical term for intellectual disabilities and got twisted into a slur over time. 

because of that, it carries a lot more harm, which is why most people see it as deeply offensive.

while i mostly agree with your take, in most or certain regions, the word “gay” is still highly offensive (w or w/o humor implied) 

if you’re willing to extend the grace of “gay” being more of a humor than an insult, you should be willing to give the same grace to retard (historical bias or not)

matter of fact, “retard” is one of the most loosely used term in today’s society. “retard,” even jokingly, usually doesn’t come from within the communities most hurt by the term.
