It’s actually really interesting. Afaik infants aren’t aware of the mapping of their mouth, so they stick especially larger objects into their mouths to train themselves how to eventually handle solid food. Because that's the only thing they "know" about themselves and roughly control at birth. It takes them about 6 months to even realize their feet are theirs! Weirdly it also takes about 1 year to realize their mother's is *another* person. And it takes them 18 months to realize that person in the mirror is them!
