Confession: I refuse to watch any new Apple TV+ movies or shows after they ruined Foundation.

Counterpoint: Foundation was never as good as we thought it was. (Proviso: I do not like the show.)

I’d be curious to hear more about why. I re-read the first before the show released and couldn’t move on. Found them tedious and overwrought. Could be a style issue, but my personal conclusion was they were insufferable. I’m terrified to re-read the robot stories.

The books are based on one core thesis: Humanity's behavior is deterministic in large enough numbers. Each book is a case-study of the concept. Do we need heroes? What is the role of enlightened leaders? What is the impact of outliers such as the Mule? There is also the theme, which I find very fascinating, of technology advancements and progress in an environment of abundance vs one of constraints (Empire vs Foundation). And at the same time, he has his usual, real sci-fi themes (with sci- actually meaning science). Robots and ethics, physics, nuclear power, the limits of human mind. I did not find any of these clearly articulated or even present in the series.

Theme and thesis do not a novel make.
