IMHO, base is doing a good job at incentivizing innovation at the consumer level. But do you think we also need "fundamental research" incentives? Backend optimizations and services that most consumers will never know about but can be critical for the ecosystem?

Yes, right now Coinbase is funding this and I think that is a good start. Hopefully more companies can come in over time. Base is decentralizing over time (went from stage 0 to state 1 already, stage 2 next), but it can have corporate sponsors who help fund development. Roughly like Google contributing to Android.
