I wonder what UN votes would look like if they were secret ballot. Each country chooses their representative, but from that point on it's up to each representative and their own conscience.

wouldn't that just invite massive bribes for vote changing?

Why would the US ever allow the UN to have some kind of actual power ?

fascinating reflection! ...could imagine a general bias towards being corrupted. i.e. fewer cases of a conscientious person voting against his evil country wishes vs a corrupted person voting against his decent country wishes.

Then it would just be who wants to accept the most cash from China. Probably not too different to today. 🀷

I suspect you’d also have to have the final tally be secret if you wanted to make it a conscience-only result

You can tell them to create a microdemocracy from their mobile phones :). We wish you like this app Vitalik. Its a stable prototype now. It combines different tools and creates an accessible UX for non-crypto people. They do create a DAO and use ZKProofs to communicate, but they don't need to know it, don't they :)

That’s a terrible idea man. Delegates need to be accountable and immediately recallable if they are faithless. Check out Democratic Confederalism and Abdullah Ocalan.

Adoption of secret ballots would mark a profound change in how international relations are conducted. While it could empower states to act more independently, the loss of transparency might raise concerns about accountability and the democratic nature of international decision-making... Plus the backdroom dealings

I looked into this β€” UN has 3 vote types: - Recorded (individual votes noted) - Summary (totals without individual votes) - Secret Ballot (for elections, votes kept confidential) Seems like: Decision impacting public = public vote Decision impacting assembly = private 🀷

Our organization is regularly speaking at the UN and it’s amazing the huge amount of behind the scenes work that’s involved in just lobbying governments to listen when something big is happening - So much persistence & noise! With the secret ballot point - We only wish! It’s very difficult to stomach right now.

Hey @vitalik.eth . Somewhat related to what you bring up here, at a more local community level. I am spending some of spare time researching ways to improve community governance and neighborhood safety. I wrote a short piece on the idea here: https://ihte.substack.com/p/more-effective-local-and-community

Maybe a delayed release ballot. Like you find out people's votes 5 years later. They still have to really mean it, but public opinion will calm down and rationalize as new topics enter the zeitgeist.

Defeats the point of preventing countries from going to war with each other if the delegate doesn't represent the country
