1/2 Proximity provides guidance. Leadership is not an exercise in hierarchy. It is everywhere, and it is relationship work - toward oneself, in a partnership, toward teams. This “proximity” can arise through a vision and/or understanding. The vision (the idea of the future) is a strong multiplier; the relationship work is more of a 1:1. Without inner proximity, one remains reactive and controlling. Without relational proximity, every directive becomes top-down coercion. Problems stay hidden, responsibility is handed off, systems become dumber.

2/2 With proximity, something different emerges: shared direction, safety, and genuine co-responsibility. Even in async and remote settings—when one deliberately cultivates it. Distance creates resistance. Proximity creates effectiveness. Leadership that takes relationships seriously is more demanding than an email with instructions. But it is the only kind that truly holds up in complex systems. Toward ourselves (we ourselves are already a complex system), as well as toward everyone else.
