Is it time to retire our community badges (aka the emojis in our display names)? Your success on Farcaster greatly depends on how connected you are to the core of the network. Warpcast’s invisible points (that drive the leaderboard), Open Rank, Neynar Score, and OG FarScore all rely on this core group of users. If you want to be connected to the core, you can’t look spammy. Unfortunately spammers and low value accounts have copied our community badges and it no longer signals community the way it did a year ago. Since our display names no longer show them, they are truly only seen on our profiles. You can no longer scroll the feed and quickly see who hangs out in the same cozy corners as you. When people take the time to look at your profile, you only get a few seconds to convince them you are worth following. They will judge your name, pfp, bio, and your last 10 casts in mere seconds. And if something seems off, they scroll by.

Emojis in display names appear to be a bad signal now. If 1000 of us are using it to show communities we care about, 100,000 spam accounts are using it to look more legit. It’s been overtaken by them and I’m unsure if we can take it back or if it’s even worth fighting for. I feel more connected to people than I do to communities here. Most communities haven’t thrived under the new channel model and it’s been more and more difficult to surface new casters since reverse chronological order on channels definitely does not help good content be seen. Maybe I’m holding onto a relic of old Farcaster that is past its prime. I deleted my community badges because of all of the above. Maybe someone will convince me otherwise, but it feels like it’s time to let go and close this chapter. I will miss them.

Thanks for the heads up. I will do the same. It does feel far harder to connect here than it used to.
