I understand you so well! I remember in elementary school, we each took a plant home for the summer. I loved mine so much that I wanted to keep it forever. So I took a cutting - just one leaf - and my grandma told me to put it in water and it would grow roots. It was such a magical feeling when, a few days later, I saw those tiny little white roots starting to grow from the stem.

omgg it’s cruel to make a child spend so much time with something and make them give it back. although i can see why there would be nice life lessons in that process. what kind of plant was it :) it would be so cool if you still had it

To be honest, I don't think anyone gave much thought to the children or the lessons. It was just that no one would have looked after the plants over the summer, so giving them to the kids was the easiest solution. I think it was a begonia. It lived with us for a long time and stayed with my grandmother when I moved out. But during one of my visits, I noticed that my grandmother didn't have any plants left 😑
