July-ers my wife and I just bought a house and we close tomorrow, what's the best thing you bought/did for your home?

• Get a thorough home inspection. The one they typically do before you buy may have had limitations around what they can do: for ours, they couldn't open our HVAC or water heater (which both needed replacing relatively quickly). • Deep clean the ducts & carpets (and maybe drains). This is like a clean slate. Once you start getting into bigger projects, the last thing you want is an old issue rearing its head. • Live in it before making certain commitments e.g., paint, demo (unless it's a fixer-upper). This gives you time to feel the space before making big decisions. • Seek out the neighbors. • Walk or ride bikes around the neighborhood to get a more intimate sense of what's there.
