My 3rd turned 14 yesterday. When he was young, he went through some severe medical issues.*

On yesterday’s hbd fb post, someone made a comment like, “if only you could have gotten a glimpse of him now back then [when we were going through that].”

While I appreciate the sentiment, I’m glad we didn’t know. It’s like a spoiler: knowing the end of a movie before you’ve seen how it all plays out. 

Not knowing changed how we were present, it made us realize the preciousness of every day *and* birthdays; we couldn’t take them for granted because we knew they weren’t. I wouldn’t trade that away.
