I've found essays of mine that were once published by reputable outlets (with my permission)... and then stolen, slightly altered in sneaky hard-to-detect ways that made me sound less credible, and re-published on a mirror site that looked legit. Maddening. It's one of the reasons I have so much finished-but-as-yet-unpublished writing in my private files.

I've been hearing more about this happening. Seems hard to defend against and maybe its like Onlyfans (hopefully not the worst analogy to use) where everything is heavily pirated but the actual creators still get enough income from their actual work.

Happens every day, unfortunately. Thieves know they'll get away with it the vast majority of the time, and writers have little to no recourse. I can't speak to the OnlyFans situation since I'm unfamiliar with how that works, but in general the actual creators rarely earn sufficient income from their work. I certainly haven't. Seems likely that the only viable way to deal with this long-term will be to hide most of my best work behind paywalls and just release teasers publicly. That won't be a cure-all; of course it could still be stolen and leaked, and there are other trade-offs too. But I don't know of a better alternative.
