a view i hold that i didn’t think was all that contrarian growing up is that most people on earth are good, decent people who are not motivated exclusively by self-interest

We are embedded in structures that determine this The more we outsource value to the market (if it makes money, it must be good), the more self-interest becomes not just acceptable, but moral, because the only good is making money

Unfortunately you cannot pay people to actively give a shit, that seems to be a quality people either have or don't. There's an ocean of mediocrity out there. You can only underpay or not pay at all to the extent people stop giving a shit.

You can train people to care. Militaries have done this for eons The idea of ‘giving a shit’ is not an immutable trait. People respond accordingly when someone feels their effort matters, is respected, and leads somewhere
