First of all, “hike and mic” goes hard. And secondively, as a journalism- polisci-history grad, I’m here for the historycaster content. Question: Do you think that empires can necessarily last as long today without the strength of major unifying cultural pillars like organized religion? Is cultural hegemony like what the US enjoys today enough to ensure the empire will persists even if somehow “Washington fell”?

I personally don't think so, though as someone who is religious/spiritual, my response will obviously be biased. Any empire ultimately needs an existential reason to justify it's continued existence. If it doesn't have one, it's citizens will eventually find or create a reason which will either fundamentally change the empire or lead to it's ultimate collapse. Christianity for example forever changed Rome's cultural make-up and arguably caused it to gradually become "less Roman" over the years. I just see this massive crisis of meaning with the newer generations as old religious institutions start to ebb, and I get the feeling that something at some point is going to give. When the pendulum swings back, either established religions will see a massive resurgence or we'll see newer more novel religions and belief systems emerge, similar to the New Age movement. I'm banking on the latter within the next few decades. We're past due for another Great Awakening.
