I’m afraid I’ve become that person who quote casts instead of commenting

I’m actually curious about this:

Is it “worse” for an OP to get quote-casted than replied to?

I love when people quote cast me and think it’s often a more interesting commentary than a reply.

It seems like a better distribution of the OP too(?)

I shouldn't weigh in bc I have never consciously paid attention to this, but it does seem to me like Kenny's argument is a bit more weighted toward the experience of power users (who are by definition not likely to be new users), while Dan is considering a balance of both.

As an app builder here, my number 1 concern is growth, and if reply bumping makes the app look repetitive or annoying to new people and they risk churning, I think that's useful thing to avoid.

What if Kenny's reply-oriented version of "Following" was something you had to opt-into from settings? (So that only hardcore users who care a lot would be exposed to it)

I saw a little bit of it yesterday from an exchange by Kenny and Dan on one of my comments. 

Here’s what I came to:

will say that the conversation about reply bumping focuses mostly on the feed experience, and doesn't consider other important aspects of replies + NUX:

1. good threaded (vs linear) convos make it easier for users to follow and participate in discussions, fostering sense of community (better for retention)

2. replies facilitate direct itneraction b/w users, leading to more meaningful and satisfying engagements that make users feel valued (better for retention)

3. users who receive replies perceive a platform as more interactive, socially present, and community-oriented, enhancing the likelihood they'll continue to engage (better for retention)

there is research around all of this. again, just my personal POV as someone who spends a lot of time across many social apps.

personally i appreciate and desire replies more than quote casts, unless it is a quote cast for amplification. what drew me and kept me on farcaster and many other early users was conversations, which is where it is easier to make friends. connection vs. broadcast.

Maybe it’s bc farcaster is so wholesome! I don’t experience it as dunks, but usually as “building on someone’s idea”

It has negative sentiment attached from X where it’s associated with a dunk 

I view it neutral — all depends on what’s being said hahaha

Other people seem to be making it an "or" (hence the big debate)

I do like to use both.

the distribution is definitely better, been stated many times

i also prefer quote casts for the same reasons you mention. plus I think the distribution is better, just anecdotally.

I love quote casting as well, but commenting is also something I'll do. 

Replying for me is like talking to a friend face-to-face so I kind of filter what I want to say. 

Quote casting, however, is like talking to a friend virtually or just not face-to-face and you share your own opinion with additional something you know. That's only for me though, I don't know about others

I've did learn about way too many things from others quote casting

Sometimes quoting is better than replying. Because quoting is different from replying, you have to know the person first before replying, but quoting whoever he is is much more appreciated.

I also prefer quoting, but unfortunately, it's mostly just replies. ( like me 😅)
