The Spotlight Affect is a cognitive bias where people tend to overestimate how much others are paying attention to them. But you can read this another way. Think of all the awkward moments you've had because of something you said or did. Or your mistakes. Bet you can remember it pretty clearly, right? Well how about the other way around? There are just as many moments in life where someone else messed up or did something awkward. How clearly do you remember those? For most people, not nearly as well. Just like you don't think about them, others don't think about you as much as you think. That might be a shock to narcissists, but to everyone else, it should be a relief. It means stop worrying about that thing- people hardly think about it because they're too busy thinking about themselves. So shrug it off and carry forward =)
