Can someone explain to me why requiring an ID for voting in the US is such a controversial topic? Coming from France, it's inconceivable that someone could vote without justifying officially who they are first. I think most countries with ID systems work like that for voting, no? 🤷♂️

IDK how it works in France, but here if you're poor and you lose your documents (or get them stolen) you can easily end up in a never ending Kafkaesque loop where you need a social security card and a birth certificate to get your ID but it's hard to get a replacement SS card without an ID or a birth certificate and the requirements and cost for getting a replacement birth certificate vary considerably depending on what county you were born in. This is a way more common problem than you would think. But the voting vachines are closed source anyways so even with ID laws we would still have no way to verify that the government is running a fair election.

There are voter ID cards though and if they aren't free then they should be because that is the way around that loop.
