Is it okay to cut off toxic family members or is blood always thicker?

The full version of the original proverb is actually:

"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

This means that the bonds we choose (like friendships, partnerships, or found family) can be stronger and more meaningful than those we’re born into.

Family should not be an automatic pass for someone to mistreat, manipulate, or harm you. Protecting your mental, emotional, and physical well-being is not selfish it's necessary. Sometimes loving yourself means creating distance, even from people you are related to by blood.

So yes it’s okay to cut off toxic family members.
