oh come on, I still don't fully understand why people would want to be influenced by human influencers, and now this

I don't think anyone actively seeks to be influenced!

Rather, they just don't resist it.

Very broadly speaking I think people tend to trust other people more than they do institutions and even credentialed experts.

"I can't believe this skin care product worked out for me" can be more convincing coming from a friend (or someone perceivable as a friend) than a dermatologist.

I don't think it's entirely social media to blame. Obsessively reading reviews and testimonials for products before purchasing has probably done more to erode our own ability to take chances in favor of taking someone else's word.

Well, maybe not explicitly! 

It makes sense in my mind when people respect someone for their expertise in a certain field and then follow their recommendations as far as it's concerned, but the idea of heeding the advice of someone who very literally just shills things for a living still seems foreign to me.
