It's a very unpolished thought I had the other day.

As a renter I've been crushed by Bay Area housing market and specifically the SF residents who are generational NIMBY homeowners that arguably influence much of the housing shortage in the region.

As a tourist in Japan I admire the lineage of multigenerational homes passed along over many decades, sometimes centuries, and wonder how that could look elsewhere (if well maintained).

The idea stemmed from how chaotic the world is becoming and how liberating it must be to not have to firmly set roots in a place and try to think 10, 20 years into the future.

Stability maxxing vs flexibility maxxing, something along those lines. With the (naive) hope that this would reduce landlords as businesses, increase neighborliness, stabilize renting prices, incentivize midterm leases of 3-5 years, etc etc.

Thats a fantastic case to bring up!

My last semester in college I spent in a co-op that someone had just started. I was/am a huge fan of intentional living and I learned a lot those few months. It was my introduction to properly using a dishwasher which was truly a transformative experience.

All this to say I think anchoring with children was a lazy thought of mine and probably better phrased as continuous ownership. Which for standard individual or couple owners seems to happen until they either pass or move away.

I see co-ops as a different family structure where this idea I'm proposing fits in perfectly, albeit was poorly worded. They're intentional by definition as you can more or less select members as they enter. And this addresses the point of lineage and longstanding relationships that pour into the community.

I'll have to rethink the title a bit, maybe "Homeowners should be generational" vs parents.

I totally see what you mean, but hear me out. I live in a co-op that I bought with 8 of my friends. Most of us are probably not having kids. Community is super important to us, no one can live here without accruing ownership (to be blunt, no landlords), and we plan on expanding.

We’re not anti kids, and if some of us become parents or parents join, I think those kids will have a dope group of people to help take care of them.

I think the main thing I wanna say is that we can choose not to have kids but still choose a system of living that community based and equitable.
