I see a lot of talk about it on X (from both sides, actually). why would people be scared?

oh I don't think X is representative of the average person, but I also don't know of any platform that's *more* representative either (tiktok? FC? 😅)

Also not clear from the article what's the reason people are careful. is it cancel culture? is it bc the polls were conducted during an election year (2024)? 

Seems generally Dems were more "careful" regardless of whether they're more supportive of Israel/Palestine.

Maybe people are afraid to express heterodox opinions? 🤷

I think cancel culture is a big part of it. There is obviously a large pro-Israeli contingent in the US, so the fear of offending someone you’re personally or professionally associated with plays a role

But even beyond that, seeing people get their visas revoked for things the things they say online is scary and understandably leads to self-censorship

yeah it def would have a chilling effect on speech (tho perhaps wouldn't really affect US citizens?)

I think also that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict now broadly falls along "traditional" culture war lines, and self-censorship tend to correlate w polarization (according to some studies)
