I would like to point out that it is quite possible that Trump decided to give this interview as a preparation for his upcoming visit to the UK in September - deliberately showing the British people how charming and apparently ingenuous he can be when it serves his cause. China already buys Iranian oil through covert methods. Trump announcing that China can now buy oil from Iran during the NATO summit is a move to signal to Beijing that DC is looking to ease the sanctions on China if a new nuclear deal is signed. The end goal for the US is to counter China in the region through any means necessary. The question is if Beijing will take this seriously, doubt it.
