WalletConnect is toxic for decentralization and we need an alternative! https://twitter.com/bantg/status/1719336896290001285

The problem is that the frontend configures WalletConnect, so consumers can't choose which wc relay to use (the way they can with wallets, etc). WalletConnect is too tightly coupled with frontends, it's increasingly a big problem.

WalletConnect v2.0 made it much easier to configure Which will allow dapps and wallets to independently choose their own relays It’s up to dapp and wallet developers to make this option available to end-users

If I'm using a dapp (as a consumer) which is configured to use a WalletConnect relay that is down (or is censoring), can I override it to use a different relay?

The SDK allows you to point to a different relay But just like most dapps don’t allow you to pick the Blockchain RPC provider… they also don’t allow you to choose the WalletConnect Relay provider

They do if they're using the wallet's provider, right? Maybe we need something like EIP-6963 but for injecting your own relay? Also, curious if you've investigated using something like libp2p (with a fallback to centralized relays)?

Dapps stopped using Wallet’s blockchain provider a very long time ago libp2p is too slow and took on average 2-3 seconds to connect your wallet We are progressively decentralizing our network and onboarding more providers
