Interesting. I'd put my money more on the false confidence and self-assuredness that comes from deep insularity and lack of social exposure to opposing worldviews. So kind of the opposite of what the author says in the piece, but stemming from the professional class liberal experience nonetheless.

I guess to me the piece is suggesting that there's an underlying insecurity that compels the word's usage. Which to me is a bit of a cope. If anything we observe hardening of ideologies as the "walls close in."

Right?

I can definitely see that, especially right now when the outrage over Trump is foreclosing on any real self reflection on what role these people played in strengthening his appeal in the first place.
