Interesting. I'd put my money more on the false confidence and self-assuredness that comes from deep insularity and lack of social exposure to opposing worldviews. So kind of the opposite of what the author says in the piece, but stemming from the professional class liberal experience nonetheless.

I guess to me the piece is suggesting that there's an underlying insecurity that compels the word's usage. Which to me is a bit of a cope. If anything we observe hardening of ideologies as the "walls close in." Right?
