The Gates of Hell on Earth The Batagay crater (Batagayka) is a thermokarst depression in the Chersky Range in Yakutia. It is the largest permafrost crater in the world, and it is sometimes referred to as the "Gates to Hell." The land began to sink due to the melting of the permafrost in the 1960s after the surrounding forest was cleared.
