Country phone codes Codes are distributed by geographical zones. This simplifies the communication system and facilitates international calls. The main zones and codes are: Zone 1 - North America (USA, Canada, Caribbean islands) - code +1. Zone 2 - Africa - codes start with the number 2 (for example, Egypt - +20, South Africa - +27). Zone 3 and 4 — Europe — codes starting with 3 and 4 (for example, the UK — +44, Germany — +49, France — +33). Zone 5 — South and Central America (for example, Argentina — +54, Brazil — +55). Zone 6 — Oceania and Southeast Asia (for example, Australia — +61, the Philippines — +63). Zone 7 — Russia and Kazakhstan (until 1990 — USSR) — code +7. Zone 8 — East Asia (for example, Japan — +81, China — +86). Zone 9 — South and West Asia, the Middle East (for example, India — +91, Iran — +98). The distribution principle The distribution of codes was not random, but followed a specific logic. Geopolitical factors and the technological development of countries at that time were taken into account. The distribution logic was as follows: One digit was assigned to the superpowers (the United States and the Soviet Union). Two digits are for large and important countries (France — +33, Germany — +49, China — +86). Three digits are for smaller countries or those that joined the system later (Mongolia is +976, and Fiji is +679). In other words, the later a country received its code, the longer it is. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) developed the system of international telephone codes. In 1960, the ITU developed and implemented a system known as Recommendation E.164. Changes in codes: In 1984, North Korea received a new code of 850, while South Korea retained its original code of 82. With the reunification of Germany in 1990, the country's unified code became 49; the East German code 37 ceased to exist. The Yugoslav code 38 disappeared in 1993, with Serbia and Montenegro becoming 381, Croatia 385, Slovenia 386, Bosnia 387, and Macedonia 389. When the USSR collapsed in 1991, its former republics received their own codes: Azerbaijan — 994; Armenia — 374; Belarus — 375; Georgia — 995; Kyrgyzstan — 996; Latvia — 371; Lithuania — 370; Moldova — 373; Tajikistan — 992; Turkmenistan — 993; Uzbekistan — 998; Ukraine — 380; Estonia — 372. Only Kazakhstan remained with Russia under code 7.
