my unsurprising take: in-person meetings are better. they hold a depth of communication that screens rarely capture. video calls are powerful tools — global collaboration, telehealth, friendships across time zones… but nothing replaces sitting next to someone. covid taught us that. it also reshaped our cities. in nyc, outdoor dining sheds appeared overnight. not perfect, but they gave people a place to be together. now the sheds are mostly gone, but the desire to gather hasn’t disappeared. more restaurants have real outdoor tables now. the system adjusted to human need. i think we’re entering a new phase of craving IRL. not just events, but presence. rituals. shared air and unscripted conversation. zoom has its place—sometimes the distance is useful, even necessary. but for trust, collaboration, and care? IRL still wins. and it always will, unless VR learns to replicate smell, silence, and those tiny glances that say more than words.
